You arrive at the Air Whitsundays terminal a half hour prior to departure to check in. A half hour later you are boarding the plane and taking off for the Great Barrier Reef.
Flying up the Whitsunday Passage you are able to see the west coast of Hook Island, the Whitsunday Passage, Daydream Island, South Molle Island, mid and North Molle islands before passing over Langford Reef and spit and Hayman Island.
From Hayman Island you will fly towards the Great Barrier Reef catching glimpses of the east coast of Hook Island. A short time later the pilot will fly past Bait Reef and on to Hardy’s Reef.
It isn”t long before the Great Barrier Reef comes into view and the plane begins a slow descent to give you a better view, the reef stretches as far as you can see. You will fly over a very large channel that runs between two massive reefs as you get closer and closer to your destination. As the reef comes up to meet you it is amazing!
On reaching Hardy’s Reef the plane will come in for a landing with a few small bumps but otherwise smooth and exciting arrival. The plane will taxi up to the semi submersible vessel and passengers disembark and board the glass bottom vessel for the short cruise in the large lagoon to the snorkelling site.
Snorkelling gear is supplied and everyone who wants to snorkel has 2 hours to take in the wonderland under the water. You are snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef and will be impressed with what you see. The water is not usually cold and being in a protected lagoon you can snorkel along the edges of the reef walls, coral, fish, anemone, turtles for approximately two hours to take everything in.
The take off is just as exciting as the landing and the myriad of small reefs within the larger reef grow smaller as the plane gains altitude.
The pilot will do a flyover of Heart Reef for you. Heart Reef is probably the most well known icon in this location on the Great Barrier Reef, a small reef shaped like a heart so this is your opportunity to get that sought after photo.
From here the plane will fly back to the airport passing over a large section of the Great Barrier Reef, the scenic Hook Passage between Hook Island and Whitsunday Island. You should also get a peek at Maconna Inlet before spotting the town of Airlie Beach and landing back at the airport.
For those who would like a more extensive trip that also lands at Whitehaven Beach for a light picnic lunch for an hour please have a look at the Panorama flight.
