Whitsundays Reef Tax & Stinger Suit Hire
Reef Tax
Every entering the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park must pay a government charge called reef tax. As a rule the following charges are what you will pay on top of the price of your sailing trip.
3 Day trip $39.00 per person
2 Day trip $26.00 per person
Great Barrier Reef EMC $5.00, Queensland National Parks $1.35, Fuel Levy Admin/Collection fees $4.65, up to a Maximum of $39 for 2 day 2 night or longer. $26 for 2 day 1 night tours. Wet Suits are available for hire at $5 per day.
Reef tax can vary from operator to operator with the highest rate being $40.00
Stinger Suit Hire
Tropical Queensland is home to some varieties of venemous jellyfish. For this reason operators insist passengers hire and wear what is called a "Stinger Suit" when entering the water.
A "Stinger Suit" is a light lycra suit that protects the wearer from any encounter with one of these jellyfish. Incidents are rare when the amount of people who annually come to the Whitsundays is taken into consideration.
The cost of stinger suit hire varies from operator to operator with the average cost being $5.00 per person per day for a sailing trip. Some boats charge $20.00 for a 3 days trip for stinger suit hire.
What to Bring:
Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, toiletries, towels, swimmers, rubber soled sandshoes and sandals, warm jumper, shorts, T/Shirts, camera all in a small soft bag. Excess luggage should be left on the mainland. Secure lock up facilities are available in Airlie Beach reservations will advise when checking in.
